March 2008

Bullying’s most recent manifestation, cyberbullying, is becoming ever more prevelant. Our lead article, “H8 @ skul—Cyber World Bullying,” studies this phenomenon (Is it really hard-wired into our human nature?) and suggests ways in which schools can try to diminish its presence.

Ensuring students are really prepared to succeed in school and college is the topic of several articles this month, among them “Minority Students and College Success,” “Giving All Students the Keys to College and Skilled Careers,” and “Talking About Elephants.” These authors share their thoughts on academic and social knowledge, school makeup, community involvement, and much more.

Since taking over managing editor duties of The Digest, I've used this space to mainly give readers a micro-condensation of some of the issue’s articles—forgetting to ever mention our monthly columns. So I think it’s high time that I introduce you to our regular features.

Dudley Barlow’s “Teachers Lounge” column gives us a little in-sight into his teaching (and sometimes personal) experiences, garnered from 30-plus years in the education field. He also reveiws new—and sometimes not-so-new—books that he feels are worthwhile reads in his “Resources for Educators” column.

Anne Lewis, author of “Washington News,” has been covering the educational news beat for years, and is an expert at distilling the news on federal legislation. Each month she reports on government programs, funding, and everything else that affects education.

Associate editor Susanne Peckham writes our “News in Brief” column, and although her news items are “brief,” the process she goes through to bring you these news snippets is anything but. Each month, Susanne sifts through mountains of information to hone in on the most useful information for educators. So please, be sure to check out The Digest’s monthly features.

Till next month . . .
