With the reauthorization of the Individuals With Disabilities Act, learning-disabled students continue to receive the valuable services they need in the public school system. However, too often, these students are left out of programs for bright or gifted children. Some educators overlook these students’ potential, focusing instead on their disabilities. Frequently, educators fail to see that many of the 2.9 million learning-disabled students in U.S. public schools are actually gifted students with learning difficulties.

This book encourages educators and parents to take a closer look at learning-disabled children who exhibit qualities of giftedness. The authors are leaders in the nationally recognized gifted/learning-disabled program in Montgomery County, Maryland. They have seen firsthand that bright students with learning difficulties can succeed in school when given the proper tools and educational experiences.

This book provides practical advice for helping smart kids with learning challenges succeed in school. Topics covered include identifying and recognizing gifted/learning-disabled students, what the law says of this population, planning and developing accommodations that empower these students, what works and what doesn’t work in the classroom, building supportive learning environments, and the roles and responsibilities of parents, students, and school personnel.
