Authentic Assessment for Early Childhood Intervention: Best Practices. Rune J. Simeonsson. New York: Guilford Publications, 2007. Pp. 315, $40.00, cloth. ISBN13: 978-1-59385-474-4. TEL: 212-431-9800, ext 257 • FAX: 212- 966-6708

This book presents guidelines for authentic developmental assessment of children from infancy to age 6. Unlike tabletop testing procedures, authentic assessment captures data about children’s everyday skills displayed in everyday routines.

The book addresses ways to screen and evaluate diverse populations, including typically developing children, those at risk, and those with disabilities. It demonstrates how authentic assessment can serve as the foundation for designing and monitoring effective, high-quality programs that promote optimal learning and development. It encompasses the use of observational strategies, curriculum- based assessment, and functional behavioral assessment to collect information about children’s activities in the home, preschool, and community.

Simeonsson also discusses the role of clinical judgment. While evaluators are encouraged to focus on natural settings and routines whenever possible, suggestions are also offered for creating “analogue” contexts to fully sample children’s capabilities. Throughout, particular attention is given to the importance of enlisting parents as partners with practitioners and teachers in observation and teambased decision making. Special features include recommendations for developmentally appropriate assessment tools and quick-reference “Best-Practice Guidepoints” in each chapter.
