How university presidents lead is extremely important for both the welfare of the universities and for society. Exploring the broader implications of such issues as the Supreme Court case on affirmative action regarding the University of Michigan, the University of Wyoming’s response to the murder of gay student Matthew Shepard, and changing business environments where information is shared openly and multiple constituencies participate in decision making, this book delves into the lessons university presidents have to share on questions of leadership.

Originally presented at a series of forums co-sponsored by the Center for Creative Leadership, held at Wake Forest University, each of the nine papers in this book, authored by a university president, discusses a specific issue which that president faced during his or her tenure, concluding with the lessons which were learned from these experiences.

Three other presidents were invited to respond to each paper, and their contributions are also included. The papers and discussions reveal a compelling sense among all of the presidents that they share a crucial mission, a responsibility for the health of the national culture. All of the presidents believe that their calling to the presidency obligates them to illuminate and act upon the moral convictions and values of their institutions.
